What a whole house surge protector actually is

A whole house surge protector is a panel-mounted device, known in the trade as a Type 2 surge protective device, wired directly into your electrical panel by an electrician. When a voltage spike comes through your service, the device diverts the excess energy to ground instead of letting it pass into your home's circuits.

That is a different job than the power strip behind your TV. A plug-in strip only stands between the spike and whatever is plugged into that one strip. A panel-mounted unit sits at the front door of your whole electrical system, so everything downstream gets a first line of defense, including the hardwired equipment that never plugs into a strip at all: your furnace, your well pump, your range, your EV charger.

Where surges come from

Big dramatic surges, like a lightning strike near your neighborhood, are real but rare. Most surges are smaller and far more frequent:

  • Utility switching. When the utility reroutes power or restores it after an outage, the grid side of your service can deliver spikes you never notice.

  • Storms and outages. Wind, tree contact, and the power blinking off and back on can all send irregular voltage into your home.

  • Your own large appliances. Every time a motor-driven load cycles on and off, think heat pump, well pump, air conditioner, or dryer, it can push a small spike back into your home's wiring.
